Umrah is the ‘lesser pilgrimage’ — a visit to the Sacred House that can be made at any time. It is four simple acts: entering iḥrām, ṭawāf around the Kaʿba, saʿy between Ṣafā and Marwa, and shaving or trimming the hair. “Complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah.” (Qurʾān 2:196)
The steps of Umrah
- 1
🤍Enter iḥrām at the mīqāt: ghusl, the two white cloths (men), intend Umrah, and begin the talbiya.
- 2
🕋Ṭawāf: circle the Kaʿba seven times, starting and ending at the Black Stone corner.
- 3
🙏Pray two rakʿahs behind Maqām Ibrāhīm if you can, and drink Zamzam.
- 4
🚶Saʿy: walk seven times between Ṣafā and Marwa.
- 5
✂️Shave (ḥalq) or trim (taqṣīr) the hair — and you have left iḥrām. Umrah is complete.
The Talbiya
Talbiya
Labbayka-llāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk, inna-l-ḥamda wa-n-niʿmata laka wa-l-mulk, lā sharīka lak.
Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Indeed all praise, grace, and dominion belong to You. You have no partner.

Iḥrām
What commences iḥrām
Hanafi: Iḥrām begins with the niyya together with the Talbiya (or a dhikr) — the Talbiya is tied to entering iḥrām.
Other schools
Maliki: Niyya with the Talbiya; the Talbiya is strongly emphasized at the mīqāt.
Shāfiʿī: The niyya alone commences iḥrām; the Talbiya is a sunna.
Hanbali: The niyya commences iḥrām; the Talbiya is a sunna.
Kayfiyyat al-iḥrām — al-Mawsūʿa al-Fiqhiyya.
Ṭawāf
Is wudūʾ a condition for Ṭawāf?
Hanafi: Wudūʾ is wājib but not a condition of validity: Ṭawāf without it is valid but a damm is due (or repeat while still in Makkah).
Other schools
Maliki: Ṭahāra is a condition — Ṭawāf without wudūʾ is invalid and must be repeated.
Shāfiʿī: Ṭahāra is a condition — Ṭawāf without wudūʾ is invalid.
Hanbali: Ṭahāra is a condition — Ṭawāf without wudūʾ is invalid.
